She was the MC of the night so she read what I submitted to her:

“Brian Winkeler is an OU Visual Communications graduate who was released into the cold, cruel world of 1992 with a mediocre portfolio and a prevailing sense of shame at having bought the debut CD from Right Said Fred.

Brian gained much industry knowledge and experience before being asked to leave Ackerman-McQueen, Jordan Associates and Third Degree Advertising, and is now owner and creative director of Robot House Creative where the odds of him being fired are slightly lower.

Brian has won over one hundred local and regional awards for his copywriting and design work, is the only four-time winner of the prestigious Fontana Award for Humor and was named the 2011 Advertising Professional of the Year by the Oklahoma City Ad Club.

Brian still owns that Right Said Fred CD.”

The write-up for the event inspired my presentation. Here’s what it said:

“That’s it! We’ve full-on, totally, 100% officially, had-it-up-to-here with the “Rest of the Southwest” heading. I mean yay! that we get recognized but ummmm WT*?! We are not some low-rent (well, I grant you the cost of real estate IS really low), horse riding (well yeah, I do have a horse), denim wearing (hey those NYC people wear jeans too), back water (don’t we have more coast line than most places?) where people are surprised to find good design! Heck no, good design lives here, thrives here, but too few people know about us! Why is this? Are we hiding it under a bushel basket? Do we think of ourselves as less than those NYCers or LAers? Come and hear some of Oklahoma’s best and brightest discuss the Culture of Design in Oklahoma. This is Pecha Kucha style: Each of the speakers is allowed to use 20 total slides and each of their slides is viewable for 20 seconds.”

I freaked out about the whole “Pecha Kucha” thing. Luckily, they asked me to go last so I was able to take mental notes while watching the other six speakers. Also, my pal Kathleen was a presenter and prompted Amy to advance her slides so as soon as I knew I wouldn’t have a clock on me, I got comfortable. The three pints of Left Hand Milk Stout I’d drunk at that point also helped.

So below I have my slightly edited presentation. My slides were über-simplistic so I’ve bolded the headline that was on screen with my script below each one.
___________________________________________________________________________________________________________

“That’s it! We’ve full-on, totally, 100% officially, had-it-up-to-here with the “Rest of the Southwest” heading. I mean yay! that we get recognized but ummmm WT*?!”
W-T-Asterisk. Seriously? ‘W-T-Asterisk?’ I mean, what the f**k?

I am not George Clooney.
I am not George Clooney…which should be painfully obvious. I would love to be George Clooney because he’s handsome and dashing and funny and smart and dates models and wants to save the world. The best I could ever be is a chubby Dr. Drew or a slightly more gay Anderson Cooper. I can never be George Clooney. But that’s okay.

OKC is not NYC
I’m not George Clooney. And Oklahoma City is not New York City. And it’s not LA or Chicago or Dallas or Minneapolis or Portland or Kansas City or anyplace else. For better or worse, OKC will always be OKC. And it’s our obligation, as leaders of the creative culture of OKC, to be champions of the better.

OK is not OK
Most of you probably know before our license plates were branded “Native America” by Ackerman, they said “Oklahoma is OK.” That was an attitude that almost comedically embraced and promoted mediocrity and the only thing that’s NOT funny about it is that, for generations, Oklahomans were content with just being okay.

OK used to be just OK
Twenty years ago when I graduated the last place I wanted to work was in OKC. It felt like there was no life here. No culture here. The GCS – Graphic Communication Society – was amazing but its days were numbered when the chief organizers of the group found better opportunity by moving down to Dallas. OKC was a creative ghost town.

The state of the Culture of Design in OKC is good.
Twenty years later I’m pleased to say, borrowing a line from our commander in chief, “the state of the Culture of Design in OKC is good.” And by good I’m not saying it’s just okay, or that it’s not great. But it’s good. It’s positive. It’s healthier than ever before and you just have to look around to see that it’s growing every day.

I survived Ackerman McQueen.
My first job was at Ackerman. I lasted five months. But they’ve been on top in town for over 70 years (according to LinkedIn) because, through blood, sweat and many, many, many tears, they produce exquisitely designed work. They used to be the only true game in town and they were the sole definition of the best OKC had to offer.

AC Creative Braid Creative Funnel Design Ghost Design Insight Creative Group Jenkin Design Jordan Advertising S Design Skyline Media Group Staplegun Stubble Third Degree Traction VI
Here’s an unofficial list of current local businesses that are capable of doing great design work. I’m sure I’m forgetting some. I didn’t include Foundry Collective because I’ve heard they’ve left town, which is unfortunate. And I didn’t include my pal Phillip Schroeder, who I think is the best designer in town, because he hasn’t landed on a name for his freelance biz.

I’m not saying that everyone on this list hits it out of the park every time. But there’s great talent at all these places, and the growth of these entities over the last ten years has upped the local game considerably.

We are a community of opportunity.
Not to get all Johnny Cochran but the thing that makes the state of the Culture of Design good right now is that there’s more opportunity than ever to do great design and there’s a community here that supports and celebrates great design. That’s why you’re here in this room right now. Also, you know, good beer.

“We’d love to keep some grads here, but we both know advertising employment in the OKC area is limited. Very limited.” — OU Advertising Professor David Tarpenning
The Oklahoma City Ad Club Career Day event was last week and I worked a ton on it over the last few months. This is the response I got from a local professor to explain why so few of his students were interested in the event. I shared the quote with the 80 or so students who attended Career Day but didn’t share with them who it was that was telling me what I “knew.”

Because I am a lover of gossip and a hater of presumptuous academic condescension, I’m letting you guys know that it was OU advertising professor David Tarpenning. He’s not talking specifically about jobs in design but he may as well be because this has been the attitude for ages about opportunity in town, and it’s dead wrong.

Plugging the brain drain.
Local universities are graduating more quality designers than ever before. OU and OSU are still going strong. OC occasionally sends out a rock star or two. And UCO has recently become a major player. More students are seeing what’s going on in OKC and want to stay and become a part of it, which is integral to the health and growth of a design community.

Look around.
What’s the Culture of Design in OKC like right now? Look around. Look at the great work Staplegun is doing on Project 180. Look at the gorgeous rebranding S Design is doing for Metro Transit. Drive up Automobile Alley and just look at the spaces Funnel, Ghost and Insight have created for themselves.

Look online.
Check out the websites of all of the businesses I listed earlier. You’ll see great portfolios of great print and web design. And then go to Braums.com and you’ll see that some local businesses still have a loooong way to go and maybe at some point a local agency will finally get the opportunity to free them from 1985.

Look at the ADDYs.
This is a shameless plug since I’m on all the committees but the best opportunity to truly see the best of design in Oklahoma City is at the ADDY awards. Nothing motivates me to get off my ass and do great work more than seeing all the great work everyone around me is doing, including design students. The 2012 show is February 18th.

Look in the mirror.
As a design professional you are an example of the Culture of Design in OKC. And you should relish the opportunity to be an advocate and evangelist for our culture and our community. There’s more excitement, more opportunity and more awareness of Oklahoma City than ever before and it’s up to us to define our brand and shape our message to the world.

More Coyne. Less Kern.
Wayne Coyne and Sally Kern are both ambassadors for our city and state. Regardless of personal politics, our job as a creative community is to follow Wayne’s example by promoting the fact that we are diverse. We are unique. Our strength lies in the reality that we all think differently but are unified by our belief in great design.

OK is OK.
I’m not George Clooney. I’m Brian Winkeler. And Oklahoma is Oklahoma. We are as great and strong and innovative as we choose to be. We should never again allow anyone to define us by what we are not. We need to define us by what we are. And what we are is pretty goddamn great.

WT*?!
As a design professional in Oklahoma, you need to ask yourself, “What the asterisk?”

And whatever the asterisk is is up to you.

___________________________________________________________________________________________________________

You + Us = WE

Sometimes when you work with a new client’s pre-existing brand and it’s…not exactly up to your usual standard, you just have to put your nose to the grindstone (which is a horribly painful-sounding idiom) and do your best.

And sometimes a new client’s pre-existing brand can be in the perfect spot for you to grab it and run. Touchdown-wise, not, like, dine ‘n’ dash thievery.

Such is the case with WEOKIE’s tagline “WE Make Banking Better.” It’s something the marketing team at the credit union had recently launched but hadn’t fully explored. What’s especially interesting (after hearing years of credit union marketing mantras at my previous agency) is that WEOKIE is not only not using “Credit Union” in their name on the spots, they’re actually using the word “Bank,” something almost unheard of in the industry.

As I was thinking about the assignment (three :30 member testimonial spots; super-low budget) it occurred to me that, although the “WE” is obviously a play off of “WEOKIE” (which originally stood for “Western Electric”), WE isn’t just WEOKIE. “WE” is the members and the credit union staff working together to fulfill their financial needs.

Thus was born, “You + Us = WE.” And I LOVED presenting this to the client:

Me: “The ‘WE’ in your tagline stands for just you guys, ‘WEOKIE,’ right?”

Client: “Right.”

Me: “WRONG!”

It’s fun to yell “WRONG!” at a client, but only when you throw something out at them that you know will blow their minds.

So I’m pleased to show the fruits of our labor. Just good.” in last fall’s campaign and it had resonance, so we wrapped this entire campaign around the concept of good. And the 1995 hit by Better Than Ezra just felt like a perfect fit (this cover was produced by Jason Moore Music & Sound, using the Eastlake Elementary singers).

Simon Hurst shot the photography. Digital DK shot, edited and animated the TV spot, and Lucky Dog Audio Post produced the radio (not on here yet). And the talent were volunteers from the families of the production — a fun way to keep costs down and give their parents a cool snapshot of the kids at this age.

Television :30
<embed src="http://www.youtube.com/get_player" type="application/x-shockwave-flash"width="320" height="266" bgcolor="#FFFFFF"flashvars="flvurl=http://v12.nonxt3.googlevideo.com/videoplayback?id%3Db1c68d362d40794d%26itag%3D5%26app%3Dblogger%26ip%3D0.0.0.0%26ipbits%3D0%26expire%3D1331325620%26sparams%3Did,itag,ip,ipbits,expire%26signature%3D260A48EB05DC6D0A4B9BA4D94B51976B1664DF85.21CA377A644F73CF5CE41B0DA63ACDD3EFB20116%26key%3Dck1&iurl=http://video.google.com/ThumbnailServer2?app%3Dblogger%26contentid%3Db1c68d362d40794d%26offsetms%3D5000%26itag%3Dw160%26sigh%3DqgUK8TK9OcZ7JP6B-LyCcKhEEms&autoplay=0&ps=blogger"allowFullScreen="true" />

Outdoor

<img src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_5Zn4XjbTWwg/TKz2S9n3b0I/AAAAAAAAADk/jTUgQvbbH4s/s400/GHI-Lamar-X_14x48.jpg" border="0" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5525061648516607810" style="display: block; I’m now happy to report that the project was for Express Employment Professionals’ “Leadership Instinct” event, hosted in Scranton, PA by actor Andy Buckley, known to fans of “The Office” as Dunder-Mifflin CFO* “David Wallace!”

Express wanted someone with comedy chops to write Andy’s script (as “David Wallace”) and heard through the grapevine that humor is my main thing. So I was excited and also intimidated… when you think about it, David Wallace isn’t an inherently funny character, except for his most recent appearance (after being fired) when he was eating marshmallow fluff sandwiches and drinking beer in his hot tub. And those aren’t the kind of character details you can count on a nationwide simulcast crowd knowing (or fully appreciating).

So since David Wallace always played best against Michael Scott’s inanities, Andy structured each speaker introduction with quotes from six seasons of “The Office” in a bit entitled “That’s What He Said.” Clicking on the image above will take you to clips from the event.

It was a tough, fun job and a real thrill to kinda sorta somewhat be connected to an event tied into “The Office.” Maybe one day I’ll get that spec script I wrote for the show in the right hands.

*Edited from “CEO” thanks to fact-checking by geek jerk journalist Adam Brooks.

InDecision ’10

I’ve been on the OKC Ad Club Board for two years now. The idea of nutcrackers replacing the gingerbread men hit me soon after (and it did allow a subtle “crossing swords” visual gag) and it was almost perfect! Writer/Director Rob Williams did suggest I work a gingerbread man in there somehow, so one of the nutcrackers is holding a (now frowning) gingerbread man with a bite taken out. Look closely and you’ll see the crumbs in the nutcracker’s beard.

Thanks again to Rob & Rodney with for the opportunity to work with them on another cool Guest House film!

Client of the Month(s) - January/February : RRS of Oklahoma

Because February is a short month (and because I've been unfortunately lax in my updating) I'm declaring Jan/Feb to be a two-for-one Client of the Month — and because I was producing new work throughout most of January for this client (a factor in my blog lax), it seems appropriate to choose RRS of Oklahoma as the Robot House Creative January/February Client of the Month(s)!

My fellow Ad Club Board member Andrea Decker of Element Fusion first pointed RRS my way the second week of Robot House Creative 2.0's existence (in a related story, Andrea totally rocks) and I quickly clicked with Director of Sales, Marketing + Design Caleb Mandrino. Caleb owns RRS with his brothers Steve and Chris and their family attitude extends to their customer relationships as well - they're a totally hands-on remodeling company who mostly rely on overwhelmingly positive word-of-mouth to grow their business. However, they also know how important it is for all brand materials and messaging to reflect the quality of the work and to communicate their talent and expertise.

So far we've created new logo and identity materials, print ads for the Edmond area and comprehensive brand materials for the Oklahoma City Home & Garden Show (which hit the calendar more quickly than expected and gave us a busy two-week turnaround to get a lot of materials written, designed and printed - with the help of the awesome Jason G at Impressions Printing, their business cards, banner, brand folder and insert materials were ready just in time for the show - and were very well received.

We've got a lot more in store to build the RRS brand - possibly including some broadcast pieces for storm season (not only are they expert remodelers, they specialize in roof repair and renovation as well — they pretty much have all the "R"s covered). RRS of Oklahoma is the first new client of the reinvigorated Robot House Creative and we look forward to growing this great relationship!

It’s Tricky to Rock a Rhyme

Ferris O’Brien with The SPY writes me on Facebook the other day: “…call me sometime tomorrow… i have a double secret top secret mission, should you choose to except it… end transmission”

So I’m obviously intrigued. So I start to marinate the details and the rhymes came pretty quickly:

Hint #1:
“Thor, the mighty god of thunder
Travels this bridge, legends say,
Triangulate and you may keep
The followers of the moon at bay.”

There’s a rainbow bridge from Valhalla (home of the Norse gods) to Earth (at least according to Marvel Comics) and there’s a rainbow on the album cover projected from a triangular prism (hence “triangulate”) and the “followers of the moon” refer to the album title and the “lunatics” mentioned in the title track.

Hint #2:
“Search the fountains to find a penny,
And give it a yellow kiss.
The hands will pass the numbers forth
To friends you’ll never miss.”

“Fountains” is a reference to the group Fountains of Wayne with “penny” representing coin = Wayne Coyne. “Yellow kiss” is a nod to Flaming Lips; the “hands…numbers” refer to the New Year’s Eve countdown with “…friends you’ll never miss” being a reference to the traditional song ‘Auld Lang Syne.’

Hint #3:
“The numbers added up reveal
The German word for “no.”
And every breath spoke to the mass
Around the world shall go.”

1 + 0 + 5 + 3 = 9 (“Nein”); “…every breath…around the world…” hints at the live simulcast.

Hint #4:
“When you flip the switch you’ll first hear sound
From darkness up above and lightness low to ground
Then the mouths will burn and you’ll realize
That calendar has changed to the Year of the SPY.”

The “…darkness…lightness…” line refers to the bands ‘Stardeath’ and ‘White Dwarf,’ who will be peforming with the Lips, which explains the “…mouths will burn…” reference and “…you’ll realize” directly hints at their song ‘Do You Realize.’

So it was a quick little thing that I sent to Ferris yesterday and he pretty much immediately posted the hints on Facebook and read them on the air. It didn’t take long for someone to figure it out and we really didn’t plan for it to be too much of a head-scratcher. It was just a quick little experiment that I think worked really well and was a lot of fun to put together. I’m looking forward to my next opportunity to unleash my inner poet on the unsuspecting masses. Let me know what you think!

Because He’s English

I’ve had an 83% heterosexual mancrush on photographer Simon Hurst since I met him on a KRAFT® Foods photo shoot in February of 2001. We quickly became the best of mates and have worked together as often as humanly possible ever since.

Earlier this year it came up in conversation that clients who don’t immediately agree to a photo shoot with Simon just need to hear him speak and his immediate charm – and English accent –will seal the deal. My creative gears immediately began to turn, and, with this in mind, we’ve now launched a radio campaign for Simon Hurst Photography. And why would a photographer promote himself on the radio?

Because he’s English.

Radio #1: “With an ‘R’”

Radio #2: “Vocabulary Lesson”

Radio #3: “Okie”

Radio #4: “Crap Taste in Music”

And we’re running the campaign exclusively on The SPY, the recently resurrected modern rock radio station in OKC that’s got one of the most amazing playlists on the air. They’ve given us free web banner space so we cooked up some banner ads to accompany the spots. Good times.

A Fair Shake

Years ago every bus I saw, and some outdoor boards, had a picture of OKC sportscaster Dean Blevins holding a young toddler with the headline “Never Never NEVER SHAKE A BABY!” It actually took me a few looks to realize it was him. And a Facebook page. And a Twitter feed. And all that. And hopefully soon a new home page layout on the website with links to all of the above (to replace the godawful “coming soon” message that’s been up for probably 5 years, alongside an address that’s been wrong for 4).

I’m still trying to figure out how to post MP3s of my radio spots here and on Facebook. That’s my best stuff right there.

So. I hope to stay on top of this thing and update it at various points throughout each week and maybe see if I can tart it up a bit, too.

Stay tuned.

-B
